J Curve is the new Italian Champion with Jeniale CAIM is the top Corinthian

Porto Cervo – After three days of racing, the J/70 Italian Championship came to a close today in Porto Cervo. The event, also counting as a stage of the J/70 Cup, was organised in collaboration with Yacht Club Costa Smeralda. Thanks to a consistent series of results throughout the event, J Curve, owned by YCCS member Mauro Roversi, claimed both victory in the J/70 Cup and the J/70 Italian Championship title. Jeniale CAIM, skippered by Massimo Rama, finished second overall and took victory in the Corinthian classification, while Ciclone, helmed by Yann Inghilesi, completed the podium.

The event, which got underway on October 2, saw the fleet of eighteen boats compete in a total of eight windward-leeward races, sailed in light to moderate easterly winds. The final day provided the fleet with ideal conditions, with a steady 13–15 knots of Scirocco allowing the Alan Johnstone-designed one-designs to fully express their characteristics on the racecourse off Porto Cervo.

J Curve held the lead throughout all three days, with Jeniale CAIM constantly applying pressure. After the first day, just one point separated the two teams, a margin that had increased to two points ahead of the final two races. The battle for the third step of the podium was also wide open, with Ciclone and One More Time tied on points at the end of the second day.

The two races sailed today proved decisive, with the fleet putting on a spectacular display of planing conditions in the waters off Porto Cervo. The first race was won by the Australian team aboard Swish, with Ciclone and J Curve crossing the finish line in second and third respectively. Jeniale CAIM finished eighth, but responded with a victory in the final race, allowing them to draw level with J Curve on points. The final result was therefore decided by the tie-break based on the best race scores, which awarded the victory to J Curve.

Mauro Roversi’s crew, consisting of Stefano Cherin, Giulia Conti, Diego Larcher and Filippo Amonti, thus claimed their first-ever J/70 Italian Championship title, as well as victory in the J/70 Cup. Jeniale CAIM finished second overall and first among the Corinthian teams. The battle for third place was won by Ciclone, who enjoyed a strong final day with a second- and third-place finish.

“Winning the Italian title for the first time, here in the waters of Porto Cervo, in such a competitive fleet and with conditions typical of the Costa Smeralda, is a great source of pride for me. The event was closely fought throughout all three days and gave us a unique finale, with two boats finishing on equal points. We were fortunate to come out on top thanks to the tie-break, and congratulations to Massimo Rama’s team, a brilliant rival who kept us under pressure throughout the entire event. I would like to thank my crew for all the work they have put in, not only here at Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, but throughout the entire season,” commented Mauro Roversi.

During the prize-giving ceremony, awards linked to Tenzor Sailing Club were also presented: discount vouchers towards participation in the Tenzor International Cup, held during the winter in Bodrum, Türkiye. The prizes were awarded to J Curve, Jeniale CAIM and Ciclone.

It is also worth remembering that, based on yesterday’s results, the Garmin Cup had already been awarded to Mauro Roversi’s J Curve crew.

The J/70 Italian Class, which uses Vakaros’ RaceSense system for starting-line management, is supported by Lincoln International, Garmin, VelaMania, North Sails Collection, UtilGraph, Gottifredi Maffioli and Gin Vento.
